Gang,

Normally I avoid politics, but this one is "getting ripe" where we hams can
have a positive effect. The ARRL just gave notice that the US Senate has
introduced a companion bill to the House Amateur Radio Spectrum Protection
bill.

A simple investment of 99 cents and your time to write your representative
and senators would be VERY helpful. It can be very simple and should say
that you support the concept of Amateur Radio Spectrum protection and that
you would like to see them support their respective bills. In the house it
is HR 783 and in the senate it is S 2183.
For the actual text of the bills go to http://www.senate.gov and then enter
one of the above bill numbers (no spaces) and click on the "go" button. You
can then read them if you are so inclined.

If you don't know who your senator's address go to
http://www.senate.gov/senators/index.cfm and just click on them to get their
info. For you Texans the URL's are http://www.senate.gov/~hutchison and
http://www.senate.gov/~gramm. For the representatives, pull out your voters
registration card and look at the district number printed on it. Then go to
the house index at
http://clerkweb.house.gov/106/mbrcmtee/members/mbrsstate/Uolmfram.htm and
click on the right one. That gives you their name. Clicking on
http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW.html will then give you their web page.
When it comes to these people, the post office is usually pretty forgiving.
For example, just sending a letter to "[Name], US Capitol Building,
Washington, D.C." would get it there.

So for about 99 cents you can actually help Ham radio. A mailed letter
still carries a LOT of weight in congress. We could use your weight on
these.

Thanks,
Ron

    The Hon. (name)
United States House of Representatives [or Senate]
    Washington, DC 20515

    RE: H.R. 783 [or S 2183]

Dear Representative (name) [or Senator (name)]:

Writing as one of the nation's more than 650,000
    licensed radio amateurs, I urge you to co-sponsor HR 783 [S 2183],
the Amateur Radio Spectrum Protection Act of 1999.

This bill, introduced by Representative Bilirakis,
[or Senator Crapo - yes that is the correct spelling]
is a nonpartisan, non-controversial measure designed to help
protect the radio frequencies used by Amateur Radio
volunteers in our state and elsewhere to provide emergency
    communication, technical experimentation and recreation.

Your co-sponsorship of HR 783 [or S 2183] will help ensure Amateur
Radio's public service role for the people of your
    Congressional District [or State].

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely,
