MURMANSK, Russia (Reuters) - Rescuers prepared on Tuesday to mount an undersea
evacuation to save 116 sailors trapped in a stricken nuclear submarine on the
sea floor with their oxygen running out, the navy said.
Fierce storms overnight had prevented rescue attempts, but Navy officials said
the weather was improving and the rescue could be mounted soon.
``I think that in the next hour or two we plan to send the rescue capsule,''
Navy commander Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov told RTR state television at 1330
GMT.
The crew on board the Kursk, one of Russia's most modern submarines, have been
able to communicate with the outside world only by tapping Morse code on the
hull since they were forced to shut down the reactor Sunday and let their
craft sink to the bottom.
But a Navy spokesman said the tapping was growing fainter.
``The signal is getting weaker. Of course, the oxygen is running low, people
just need to lie or sit down,'' the spokesman at the base at Severomorsk told
Reuters by telephone. It was not clear how the rescuers were able to monitor
the signals.
