I did the GPS/APRS for the AOB (Atlanta Olympic Broadcasting) Organization
during the '96 Olympics in Atlanta.
This is very similar to the setup we used, only our 4 ground units were on
BMW motorcycles.
The uplinks from the cars would likely be just like ours- on the 10 shared
ENG frequencies, just outside of the part 15 area of the band that we call
"ours".
The way we did it was with these uplinks being received by a several
helicopters on 2.5 GHz and then relayed to guys on rooftops on either 4 or
7 GHz. The guys on the roofs aimed 2x4 ft rectangular dishes at the
helicopters as they moved.
The telemetry is done on commercial 450-460 MHz frequencies. Nothing is
done on Ham freqs (although I did receive a letter from the FCC a few years
ago for the Atlanta 500 race. They wanted to know if we had a problem with
an experimental transmitter to be used at the race. It was very similar to
the "experimental" system they were setting up in the LA area on the Police
choppers.
