Thanks to all those who answered my plea for help. As it turns out an NTE177
diode fixed my problem. And it only cost 42 cents.
My problem was the (hamfest special -sure it works fine- used) HTX 212 smelled
like it was burning whenever I transmitted. Research showed a Capacitor, diode
and resister smoked on the board. A long search for the Schematics and I
finally bought them on ebay. I now have them if anyone else needs them. I
purchased the replacement parts with your help and installed them today. A
quick call on the local repeater shows that the problem is gone. I assume this
was struck by some sort of static surge and resulted in a shorted diode. (It
was in the TR switching circuit). Since the repeater uses CTCSS I know that
works too.
My only (slightly annoying) problem is that now the S meter shows about one
half full with no antenna connected. Also the squelch must be 3/4 full to
engage. The gremlin must have taken out something else at the same time. But
the radio works fine, and puts out 45 Watts and has tones. What else could you
ask for.
Thanks for all the offers for help and to John kd5inm who suggested the NTE177.
