OK, I guess I need a lawyer specializing in telecommunications. My
impression was that anyone holding a currently valid amateur radio
license that required passing morse code at least 5 wpm could go to
the next available VE session and take any and all required written
elements to upgrade to Extra. They would be assured the current
question pool until April. Right, wrong, other?
As to the complainers, there's still a huge number of folks who claim
they cant do 5 wpm. They're still on the outside where you want them.
Best of all, the medical exemption, with a long and wide history of
fraud is gone. Is the absolutely no code Tech gone except to
renewers? Seems that the top is easier but the entry level is harder.
I'm sorry that the current Extras are upset. It was hard for my wife
to deliver my son but I don't begrudge those parents that had an
easier delivery. I passed 13 wpm. I deeply admire the skill of the 20
wpm+ operator. I'm looking forward to welcoming many high quality
individuals to our ranks and to the HF part of our hobby. Perhaps
the FCC could come up with some method to add endorsements to attach
to the records of any class of license that they had demonstrated
competency at various levels of Morse.
We're all Hams and need to unite for the good of this precious and
widely threatened international resource.
