Ol' SOL is acting up! You weren't planning any contesting this weekend,
were you?

Gang,
Just got to work, checked things, and there was a
HUGE X6 (X5.7 to be exact) FLARE at 1003 UTC 14 JUL
from region 9077, which is the HUGE region sitting nearly
smack in the center of the sun. This is important, because
solar activity from near the center of the sun will have a
trajectory that will certainly hit the earth.
This is a MAJOR flare event, of which you will see only once
or twice per solar cycle. A full proton flare (it takes a huge
flare to fling protons at the earth) for which protons are
being dumped into our polar regions already. A full-halo CME
(coronal mass ejection), meaning when the shock wave hits us
sunday (?), it will be a high density shockwave and trigger a
SEVERE geomagnetic storm and huge auroral displays.
Incidentally, the shockwave from wednesday's X2 flare has NOT
yet arrived (about 1500 UTC), so it will probably get here at
anytime for another geomagnetic storm today.
Government agencies have already issued various satellite warnings,
damage to satellites and orientation problems possible, power grid
problems, etc.
THIS IS A BIGGIE.
Will post more data later today after shockwave velocities and
things like that have been measured that tend to be used for
predicting the impact to planet earth.
72, Paul NA5N
