Wow!! JayBob has outdone himself again with his speakers this time. George
Dobbs and Roy Lewallen. Both of these gentlemen have been speakers at many
qrp and ham radio events throughout the world. They are both heroes of
mine, and I am so thrilled that I get to be the MC and introduce them, what
an honor.
Arkiecon has a flavor all its own, and is one of my favorite hamfests. This
year I had a choice between Dayton and Arkiecon, and I chose Arkiecon,
because of the wonderful hospitality you see in Arkansas. Everyone is nice
to you there, from the waitresses to the hotel management, to the owners of
he hall that hosts the hamfest. Everyone wants to make sure that you have a
good time.
The hamfest is a nice one, and lots of goodies can be found there. Last
year, Jay took breaks between the talks so we all had time to go out and
check out the fleamarket and vendors, and it was a great idea. I loved it,
and so did the rest of the qrpers.
We kind of started a neat thing last year at the hotel. They have a small
room that they use for a continental breakfast in the mornings, that we used
for a group get together. Graham Firth, Nick Kennedy, George Heron, Chuck
Carpenter, Darryl Swenson, Mike Fitzgibbon and I all took turns at pickin'
and grinnin'. I think that JayBob is gonna check with the hotel management
and see if we can get that room again for Friday night. Sure hope so. I'm
bringing my guitar, and Nick Kennedy and Dennis Foster said that they would
bring banjo and guitars too. I'm working on a play list of old time and
bluegrass songs for us, and if you would like a copy of it, please send me a
private email asking for the Ft. Smith Turkey Fry, Fried Cukes, QRP Group
Friday Night at the Guest House Inn Hospitality and BS Room Song List. If
you play guitar, mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, etc. you are more than welcome
and encourage to bring your instrument and have some fun.
Friday night starts off with the No Host dinner, (Vern you gotta pay for
your own), and then we adjourn to the hotel. The dinner usually features at
least one practical joke by Kelsey Mikel, K5PWR, and you don't want to be
caught napping when it happens. Keith Newman, K5YCM, is the guy who makes
all the arrangements for the dinner, and does a fabulous job. (I have to
say that because he saves me a seat, grin.)
Saturday, JayBob and the boys host the best time in middle America with the
Ft. Smith Hamfest and QRP Forum. George Dobbs and Roy Lewallen will each
give two talks, and there will be tons of famous people there. The Texas
group is coming, Governor Win Dooley has arranged to get temporary visas for
the boys from baja Kansas, so Dub, Burl, Dennis, Royce, Don and all the boys
will be able to get across the state line. (Kelsey says the most important
thing is that they will be able to go home, grin.) The St. Louis Club is
gonna send a group down, and I bet that the Iowa boys will be there too!!
You need to be there too!! These events are about people. Jim Duffey and
Dave Yarnes come all the way from New Mexico and Arizona because it is so
much fun. If you are within a days drive, make the trip. The Guest House
Motel has great rooms at a very reasonable price (I think less than $50 per
night.) and the rooms are excellent.
Vern Wright, Jim Cates and I are coming from California, and we all look
forward to Vern paying for our Free Barbecue Tickets Saturday night.
Can't wait for Arkiecon, and I hope to see you there.

Now, if you live on the east coast, you don't have to sit at home and whine
about all the fun that we are having in Ft. Smith. You have Atlanticon the
very same weekend!!!!!!!!!! George Heron and all the NJ Boys are putting on
another one of their fantastic QRP weekends. Great hotel, fabulous
speakers, fun activities, and best of all, the chance to meet and renew
friendships with all the great qrpers on the east coast. George has another
great lineup of speakers including:
Paul Harden
Dave Benson
Dave Gauding
Joe Everhart
Jim Kortge
Ron Plityka
and Master of Ceremonies Rich Arland!!!!!!!!!!
This one is a big one, and you don't want to miss it. Ok, we have the East
Coast and the Midwest covered for the weekend of April 6-7, sorry but all
you guys on the west coast are gonna have to travel to have fun this
weekend. grin. Hope to see all of you that can make it. 72, Doug
