Besides NARS and others efforts for QRPTTF this year, I was able to operate
for only about an hour (5:00 to 6:00pm) this last Saturday.
I was asked to fly down to Harlingen for a few hours, to work for a buddy of
mine. I packed up my QRP rig and accoutrements, just on the chance I could
set up somewhere and operate for a bit. This would be my first true field
operation.
Everything was carry on luggage and was searched thoroughly (shoes, too)
both to and from Houston. All the wires, coax and the gel cell tended to
freak the security folk. They had no problems with the gear, once I showed
them everything, though it only took an extra 10 minutes to get to the gate.
I was able to finish up the work and drive to the gulf by about 4:30pm.
I was able to set up at the lighthouse at Port Isabel. The lighthouse tender
was kind enough take my picture with water in the background, for
verification of the "OC" ocean location.
It took a little while to tune things up and I had a couple visitors as
well. Also, I'm still not as proficient with CW and QSO's, so this was good
practice. Only had three Q's (two near Dallas and one from Utah), but it
wasn't for lack of candidates or conditions. I packed up by 6:30pm and
hustled to the Harlingen airport for my 8pm flight back to Houston.
Had great fun, accomplished my goal of setting up and operating a field
station and I'm sure the multiplier will help those few I snagged. I
learned a few things about field oparations as well (like take paper
holders/weights for the wind).
I scored a whopping 160 points, hi. The log was sent in today.
