May 18, 2000 - Thursday @10 AM - Booker T. Washington Balloon Group from
Wharton Municipal Airport - Pressure data as a tone on FRS Ch.1 & fireball
on 28.322 MHz - As the tone frequency gets lower, so does the pressure. As
the beep rate on the fireball gets slower, so does the temperature.

>> Fellow amateurs, I'm happy to report that we are "GO" for our first ever
>> amateur balloon launch. Here's the info:
>>
>> Date: Saturday, May 20, 2000
>> Place: Athens Municipal Airport; Athens, Texas,
Henderson
>> County
>> Times: Set-up 9 AM; Student instruction 9:30; Launch
>> 10-10:30 AM
>> Expected flight time: 2-3 hours
>> Maximum altitude: 130,000 feet or about 25 miles
>> Rate of Rise: Approx. 820 feet / minute
>> Line of sight: 500 miles +
>>
>> Payload:
>> * Crossband repeater (446.00 Mhz Up; 146.52 Mhz Down)
>> * Inside / Outside temp sensor (Announced over downlink every 7
>> minutes)
>> * 35mm film camera
>>
>> Contacts over the crossband repeater will be run contest style. We'll
>take
>> a round of check-ins and then work that list before taking more.
Students
>> from R.C. Fisher Middle School in Athens will be helping exchange
>> information over the air, so please bare with them. They're only 12 and
>for
>> most this will be their first experience with amateur radio.
>>
>> Please send your QSLs right away since the students only have a few days
>of
>> school left to display them on the bulletin board. We'll send out a
>special
>> photographic QSL which will include photos taken the day of the event.
>> These cards may take a month to get printed.
>>
>> If you're coming, bring the following: hat, sunscreen; water bottle;
lawn
>> chair; handheld radio; camera; camcorder; binoculars. If you're bringing
>> talkative kids who would want to talk over the radio through the balloon
>> payload, familiarize them with phonetics and have them there at 9:30 for
>> special instructions.
>>
>> Please reply by e-mail if you're bringing a kid from out of town. We
only
>> have a maximum of 30 5-minute time slots for kids to operate during the
>> 3-hour flight. I speak at the local middle school tomorrow and I'm not
>sure
>> how much interest I'll get from them. We just need to get a rough count.
>> If we have only 10 kids, for instance, each will be able to operate
>longer.
>>
>>
>> Also, if you'll be joining us on the air, please reply and let us know
how
>> many students you'll having meet us on the air. Again, we need to get a
>> rough count so we can plan accordingly.
>>
>> Recovery teams, please check in with our information booth when you
arrive
>> at the airport so we'll know who all we'll have out searching. And even
>> though it may be warm on launch day, it's best to wear jeans unless you
>want
>> to possibly get scratched up like I did on the last recovery adventure I
>> went on. We don't know whether it might land in the brush somewhere.
>>
>> There won't just be one event going on Saturday. This is the grand
>opening
>> of the Athens airport and they will have vintage, experimental, and
>> ultralight aircraft there. If weather permits, a hot air balloon may
even
>> be launched.
>>
>> Please understand that this is a pilot project--an experiment.
Everything
>> may not go exactly as planned, but it's a learning experience and
>certainly
>> a good time will be had by all.
>>
>> Thanks for your participation. We'll hope for good weather. See you
>there,
>> or on the air!
