Well I already heard from the whiners and criers and they were out numbered
by the "Hey lets look at this" by a ratio of 8:1.
Range. LPFM has three power levels, 10, 100 and 1000 watts. 10 watts and a 6
db gain antenna at 100 feet is about the same as the old class D FM stations.
The A contour is 2-4 miles, the B contour is 9-11 and actual range was
usually 15 miles, more LOS. Naturlaly if you can get higher than your ham
antenna its better, find a tall building. 1 KW is good for up to 30 miles or
more.
Yes its non commercial, but that doesn't mean non revenue. the PBs, NPR,
Moody, Trinity stations are all non commercial but rake in millions a year in
$ from sponsorships (This program is brought to you by Mobile Oil...Joes Bar
and Grill, the Church of been there done that, ... get it)
Music roylaties. What music? There is a radio station in Wisconsin that
plays only Polka music imported from Europe. There are no license fees on any
of it, so BMI and ASCAP go pound sand. News? read the news wire or paper or
the W5YI report. I wouldn't out Newline on, Pasternak would be begging for
more money and he likely makes more than any of us at KTTV TV in LA.
Someone else may file! Yeah, so? Everyone has a right to file for a station.
The decision is supposed to be lottary, so get an application ready and wait
for the filing window, and mail it in.
The FCC is basing the facilities engineering on only separation distances, so
you don't have to calculate any FCC 50/10 interference contours. If you have
deep pockets, you can get this done for $1,000-$3,000 including the
application by a qualified FCC consulting engineer. Less if you buy him some
beer or a new 2 meter antenna.
SOmeone suggested Squak net on the nternet for a national distribution sistem
vs SCPC. Hay why not? We're hams, we should be able to find cheap ham
solutions to any of this stuff.
