I have been talking with John Phillips, ARRL's EMC/RFI Engineer, about
the trouble I have been having with RFI. For those of you who don't
know, I have RFI from power line sources (severe) and have been working
with Reliant Energy for going on five months now. They come out find a
problem, own up to it but it never seems to get fixed. They have
quieted some small ones using penetrox/noalox to suppress the spark.
Reliant says it is a long term solution. However the ARRL disagrees
with this.
The WORST NEWS is Reliant Energy has started charging $100 per hour,
paid up front with out guarantee of a resolution to go out on RFI calls.
Currently this policy to charge seems to be coming only from "selected
Service Centers" within Reliant Energy. This has been verified by John
at the ARRL.
John is currently putting together a case on RFI for the FCC. He would
like to have some input from hams who have dealt with RFI within
Reliant's system. He is interested in time of resolution, was the cure
long term, how many trips did it take to resolve the problem and was it
a fix or a temporary patch. Also he is interested in cases that were
claimed to be UNRESOLVEABLE by Reliant.
He would like your success or failure "war stories" to be e-mailed to
him and these can be just a short informal e-mail notes to
K2QAI@arrl.org (John's e-mail at headquarters). Use the subject line
above in your message (RFI & Reliant).
I hope those of you who have had dealings with Reliant involving RFI
issues will take time to write John. Reliant's performance has already
gotten national attention in this area and it seems that is not likely
to improve unless something happens.
Houston we have a problem.
Thank you.
